This 111 page introductory textbook is primarily intended for medical students. The book is divided in four sections covering: 1) Basic principles of ophthalmology; 2) a systematic presentation of diseases in the visual system; 3) special topics including refractive errors, low vision aid, ophthalmic surgery and lasers; 4) clinical decision making, discussing differential diagnoses in eight commonly encountered clinical settings including the acute red eye, sudden loss of vision, double vision, and spots before the eye. The text is organised in 51 chapters, each consisting of two opposing pages. The text is well illustrated with good quality colour images.
The amount of information that the authors managed to squeeze into the 111 pages is quite impressive. Despite the condensed format the text is generally easy to read. With its well‐organised, condensed format, and good illustrations the book seems to be a good opition for medical students with limited time to prepare for exams in ophthalmology. Students should be aware, however, that the legal standards for driving and eligibility for social benefits in the Nordic countries differ from those in the UK. The good coverage despite limited volume might be also useful as an introduction for ophthalmology residents, during their first month in an eye department. Opticians, nurses, optometrists and other professionals affiliated to the ophthalmologic profession might also find the book useful as a succinct, and easily accessible, though not comprehensive, reference. The book is neither intended for nor sufficient for residents in ophthalmology beyond the first few months of their training.

This compact book, which surprisingly has nearly 600 pages, is packed with information and advice for the busy general practitioner, medical student, optometrist or ophthalmologist-in-training.
The text is well illustrated with colour plates, black and white photographs and line drawings. We have the advantage in ‘eyes’ that we can often ‘see’ the problem, and the line drawings should encourage eye health care workers to illustrate their own clinical findings.
Thirteen eye specialists have contributed to the text. The section on Common Ophthalmic Problems, where symptoms and signs as they present to the practitioner are considered, is rightly described as a ‘book within a book’. From the perspective of the Journal of Community Eye Health, it is good to find significant reference to infections, infestations and nutritional diseases, recognising the great importance of tropical and subtropical ophthalmology in the appreciation and understanding of eye diseases worldwide.
